Wednesday 25 April. As West Australian footy fans gear up for the inaugural AFL Western Derby at Optus Stadium this Sunday 29 April, The Merrywell has come together with both the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers to launch two footy-themed “sangas” to raise money for both clubs’ charity of choice - with $5 from every combo purchased going to each clubs’ charity.
Available from ‘Derby Day’ this Sunday April 29th, West Coast Eagles’ fans will be able to tuck into the ‘Eagles Big Bird Sanga’, filled with buttermilk fried chicken, oozy cheese sauce - in true honour of the golden team colours – topped with coleslaw ranch, lettuce and tomato between crispy waffles.
Fremantle fans will be able to indulge in the ‘Freo Surf n Turf Sanga’ which pays homage to the club’s maritime history, loaded with popcorn prawns, mouth-watering roast beef, cheddar hi-melt cheese and a punchy remoulade sauce – all served up with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on crunchy toasted sourdough.
The West Coast Eagles are supporting Telethon, one of Australia's leading children's research centres, dedicated to improving the lives of kids and young people. Freo are supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities, an organisation that helps seriously ill children and their families.
Crown Perth’s Chief Operating Officer – Food, Beverage & Entertainment, Andrew Hill, says Derby time provides the perfect opportunity to indulge your team pride in a “sanga” for a good cause.
“West Australians love their footy but their passion also runs deep when it comes to giving. We are home to the country’s greatest proportion of charitable givers,” he says. “We are excited to bring two passions together and help us collectively raise money for two causes that make a real difference in the WA community.”[1]
So who does Hill think will win?
“In terms of our tip on which “sanga” will prove more popular, I think we’ll stay on the fence for this one and barrack for both great community organisations.”
Get behind both teams and head to The Merrywell from Sunday, 29 April. The team-themed combos will be on-sale for one month - the question is which “sanga” will you side with?
