THE CROWN RESORTS AND PACKER FAMILY FOUNDATIONS ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE $25 MILLION MELBOURNE AND PERTH ART EDUCATION INITIATIVE - 01 April 2016
Friday 1 April, 2016. Gretel Packer, Chair of the Packer Family Foundation, today announced the launch of the Melbourne and Perth Art Education Initiative - a $25 million, eight year joint commitment of the Crown Resorts and Packer Family Foundations.
Show Details

Based on the success of the Western Sydney Arts Initiative, the Melbourne and Perth Art Education Initiative will provide more young Australians with the opportunity to engage with the arts and help them reach their full potential. As well as promoting creativity, most of these programs will be education focussed, using art as the vehicle with which to engage youth with their learning and their community.

Ms Packer said, “Australia is a vast, dynamic and multi-cultural country. The programs we partner with through our Melbourne and Perth Art Education Initiative, as well as our Western Sydney Arts Initiative, will provide young Australians important social and cultural access points, mentoring and engagement opportunities, helping them on the path to fulfil their dreams.”

For information on how to apply for funding from the Melbourne and Perth Art Education Initiative visit www.crownresorts.com.au/foundation – all applications must be received by 5pm on 15 June, 2016.

About our $200 million National Philanthropic Fund:
Launched in 2014, the National Philanthropic Fund is a joint commitment of the Crown Resorts and Packer Family Foundations. Over 10 years, from financial year 2015 to financial year 2024, $200 million will be allocated to organisations which provide young Australians access to a better education, more opportunities to be creative and more opportunities to develop the self-esteem and confidence that will help them to build happy and fulfilled lives.

In its first year, the National Philanthropic Fund provided significant support to over 80 programs. Utilising art, music and sport, many of these programs are aimed at keeping some of the community’s most marginalised youth engaged with their education and learning.

The National Philanthropic Fund is administered through two sub-funds - the $100 million Community Partnerships and Indigenous Education Fund and the $100 million National Arts Fund. Within the $100 million National Arts Fund sits the $30 million Western Sydney Arts Initiative and the newly announced $25 million Melbourne and Perth Art Education Initiative.

The Crown Resorts Foundation Board is chaired by The Hon. Helen Coonan, and the Packer Family Foundation Board is chaired by Ms Gretel Packer. Both Boards offer extensive philanthropic experience with other members including Mrs Roslyn Packer AO, Mrs Rowena Danziger AM, Mr Harold Mitchell AC and Mrs Lucy Turnbull AO.

GEORGY GIRL – THE SEEKERS MUSICAL CROWN THEATRE PERTH 8 to 24 July, 2016 - 24 March 2016
Celebrating one of Australia’s most loved groups, Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical will commence its Perth season at the Crown Theatre from 8th July, 2016.
Show Details

Georgy Girl tells the remarkable story of legendary pop group The Seekers, the first Australian band to achieve international success.

Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical features all their hit songs including The Carnival is Over, I’ll Never Find Another You, Morningtown Ride, A World of Our Own and, of course, the Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl. These classic songs have been enjoyed by generations of music lovers around the world, and particularly by Australians for whom The Seekers form part of their musical DNA.

Featuring a stellar cast including Pippa Grandison as Judith Durham, Phillip Lowe as Keith Potger, Mike McLeish as Bruce Woodley, Glaston Toft as Athol Guy and Ian Stenlake as John Ashby, Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical follows the story of the group from their folk and jazz beginnings in Melbourne, through their meteoric rise to world pop stardom in the ‘60s, to today.

“We are absolutely delighted that the story and the music of the Seekers is being brought to the stage as a musical. The idea of a musical based on the story of our group was first raised over four years ago by someone very familiar to us - Patrick Edgeworth, the talented scriptwriter is Judith’s brother in-law, and knows our story well. He consulted with Graham Simpson, who has been part of our team for many years, and wrote Judith’s life story in his best-selling book ‘The Judith Durham Story - Colours of My Life’.

“In August 2014, Richard East and Dennis Smith asked us to be part of an invited industry audience at a workshop presentation of the musical. The response from the audience was amazing - a standing ovation. It was everything we could have wanted and more.

“We hope you will share and continue to enjoy our journey, as our story comes to life as a brand new Australian musical.”

- Judith Durham AO, Athol Guy AO, Keith Potger AO & Bruce Woodley AO, The Seekers

This new musical is produced by Richard East, an originating producer of Mamma Mia!, and Dennis Smith, producer of Dusty – The Original Pop Diva.

The popular quartet was the first Australian group to achieve major chart success in the UK and US, and they became the first group ever to reach number one on the UK charts with their first three singles, I’ll Never Find Another You, A World of Our Own, and The Carnival is Over, which outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Influential UK music magazine NME voted The Seekers 1965’s ‘Best New Group’.

In 1967, Georgy Girl became the first number one song for an Australian group in America. Later that same year, the Seekers made a triumphant return to their home town, drawing a record-breaking crowd of more than 200,000 people to Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The band was also named joint “Australians of the Year” for 1967 - the only group to be honoured with this award; and were each awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

In July 1968, Judith announced she was leaving The Seekers to pursue a solo career and the group disbanded. The Seekers’ Greatest Hits album was released and spent 17 weeks at number one in Australia and six weeks on top of the UK charts.

Written by Patrick Edgeworth, Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical tells the incredible story of one of the country’s true national treasures. A band whose modest beginnings at a café in South Yarra took them to concerts around the world. It’s a journey full of laughter, a few tears, but most of all, featuring the magnificent songs we all know and love.

Crown Australian Resorts Chief Executive Officer, Barry Felstead said “We are delighted to bring you Georgy Girl, which is just one of many spectacular shows due to entertain Perth audiences here in the coming months. Crown Theatre Perth plays host to an exciting line-up of award winning shows each year with over 490,000 patrons coming through its doors in the last year. We are proud of our dedication to delivering world class entertainment and support of live theatre, the arts and culture in Western Australia.“

Georgy Girl - The Seekers Musical is directed by Gary Young with musical supervision by Stephen Amos.
